The Role

David Kohn Architects is recruiting a Part 3 architect with strong gallery and exhibition design experience to support the Arts Lead in delivering arts projects of high calibre. You will be the day-to-day project lead and are expected to take responsibility for the role and to communicate regularly and effectively with your team members and line managers on progress and any issues. Projects within the arts sector include public and private museums and galleries, cultural institutions, exhibitions design and collaborations with artists. Previous clients include the Royal Academy, V&A, ICA, Wellcome Trust, Design Museum, Sotheby's, Christies, Stephen Friedman, Thomas Dane and Stuart Shave galleries. The Practice

David Kohn Architects was established in 2007 and has gained an international reputation for the quality of its design. We collaborate with our clients, consultant teams and end users to deliver highly tailored schemes that exceed expectations. We are currently working on projects including a new campus for New College Oxford, a mixed use building in Birmingham in collaboration with a local arts organisation and an architecture faculty in Belgium. Previous arts projects include unique collaborations with artists Fiona Banner RA, Simon Fujiwara and Pablo Bronstein. Supporting our clients in the drive towards carbon negative futures is a critically important part of our current and future work.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Collaboration: Meet with construction professionals, statutory organisations and clients to agree and resolve designs. If David Kohn Architects are design team leaders, co-ordinate the design team’s efforts and steer them towards timely design. Visit proposed locations, clients and building sites, which may include overseas travel;
  • DesignBe conversant with the David Kohn Architects Design Guide. Liaise with your line manager to ensure design reviews are held at least fortnightly with the Director. Be conversant in David Kohn Architects precedent projects, relevant details and design strategies and apply this to preparation and presentation of proposals, including detailed drawings, material or product selection and specifications. Understand the design background of the project and how this will impact decisions such as selection of consultants or the design development;
  • PlanningEnsure your project has an appropriately comprehensive and up to date resource plan, milestones, activities and deliverables to enable successful completion;
  • Reporting: Report weekly to your line manager on the progress of the project against milestones, relaying any issues requiring attention;
  • Management and Control: Follow good industry and project specific requirements with respect to running projects including aesthetic, technical and commercial aspects;
  • Project ManagementEnsure wider project goals are achieved on time and within the agreed budget through continuous and effective engagement with all stakeholders from clients to design teams, local communities and end users;
  • CPD: Maintain appropriate and up to date professional skills, knowledge of the industry and David Kohn Architects policies, standards, procedures and guides, including studying relevant rules and regulations to ensure projects fall within all constraints;
  • Line Management: Oversee work by Assistants as required; manage teams effectively, efficiently and in line with the studio’s guidelines;  contribute to wider resourcing considerations, including studio work planning, team development and recruitment;  mentor junior staff and nurture their skills;
  • Business Development: Assist with, and foster client and consultant relationships and contribute to business development. Take part in or lead competitions;
  • Research: Lead project related research.

Experience and Skills

  • Demonstrate solid experience in gallery refurbishments projects and exhibition design; 
  • Regulations savvy with strong understanding of UK processes and standards;
  • Demonstrable track record of running projects from inception to completion;
  • Experience in delivering low carbon / BREEAM excellent or outstanding designs;
  • Commercially astute with track record of projects delivered within constraints such as agreed timescales, construction cost and internal resource budget;
  • Ability to coordinate and manage external technical staff, consultants, and contractors;
  • A sensitive and rigorous approach to brief development, design and materiality supported by a portfolio of the highest quality;
  • High proficiency in Vectorworks / Revit, 3D modelling and rendering skills, In-Design and Photoshop software;
  • Strong presentation skills with an emphasis on hand sketching;
  • Ability to communicate complex issues, verbally, in writing, and through drawings and models, to different audiences and to lead clients comfortably through the design process;
  • Highly organised, be able to prioritise both the design team’s and your own internal team’s work to meet deadlines under pressure;
  • Ability to develop creative solutions such that the interests of different stakeholders are appropriately addressed;
  • Ability to hand draw ideas, plans and details confidently in design discussions;
  • Understanding of physical model-making and ability to direct the assistants to explore and deliver ideas efficiently;
  • Knowledge of architectural history, the work of David Kohn Architects and the practice's design approach;
